A long time requested feature gets added to Mudlet.
Being able to move Mudlet profiles effortlessly between computers has been a long time dream for many Mudlet players and simplifying the backup process a feature requested by many others. Mudlet now incorporates a method to do both by being able to run the program in portable app mode.
A portable application (portable app), sometimes also called standalone, is a program designed to read and write its configuration settings into an accessible folder in the computer, usually the folder where the portable application can be found. This makes it easier to transfer the program with the user’s preferences and data between different computers.
While there is no change to the way current users play their MUDs, nor is there any specific portable app version you need to download, you simply need to have the latest version of Mudlet that has this functionality (available since 4.19). And because we love all operating systems, Mudlet supports portable mode on Mac, Windows and Linux!
To enable portable mode the user simply needs to add one file (a placeholder named portable.txt) to the Mudlet path. To get started please see our wiki article for full instructions.
This feature was funded by Mudlet’s Bounty Program. Thanks to ConcurrentCrab for helping make Mudlet a better program, we hope you enjoy your reward! If you fancy helping out Mudlet and possibly getting paid in the process, check out our open bounty issues here.
